January 2012 Bead Journal Project

My January project is finally complete.  Last January I had a mastectomy and became part of the "pink" community.  I am definitely not a pink person, especially what I identify as "breast cancer pink".  Red, quite definitely, or fuchsia or magenta.  Anything that is rich and lively.  This necklace is my protest.  If I am going to be part of a pink community I want it to be on my own terms.

  1. And your terms turned out quite beautifully! It's an amazing piece.

  2. I like your commentary here.
This piece is really lively! I really like your choice of bead mix. The lighter beads and finish really add a luster to the necklace.

  3. Thank you. I love playing with color. Maybe that is why I like beads so much. The color is so intense.

  4. Kay it's beautiful. I like that you're taking on the 'pink' on your own terms. All the best!

  5. And well it should be on YOUR terms! Congratulations on both surviving breast cancer and your fabulous necklace. I'm "in the pink" just looking (make that drooling) at it! Are you going to do a necklace in this style each month for the year? That's an awesome goal!

    1. Robin,
Thanks. I am looking at this project as truly a journaling experience. The necklace each month will be based on this last year so each month will have a different theme. I don't know that each necklace will be this complex. The necklace for February is reflective of my Buddhist beliefs so by the nature of the topic may be much more simple. On the other hand the one about friends and family should be pretty wild.

    2. I am soooooooooooooooo looking forward to seeing them. I admire you for being able to weave free-form, telling stories with it the way I do with bead embroidery!

    3. Robin,
I have admired your work for years. I have all of your books. I have tried repeatedly to bead in your style but I just can't pull it off. I don't see it. And probably more important to me, I don't feel it. So I use your books and blog for inspiration. For the most part I am happy with my own voice. I do love this beading group.

  7. Bravo! It is your cancer so it should be on your terms, I agree completely. I am fighting thyroid cancer and don't I know how you feel! Your necklace is beautiful and can't wait to see your next one!

    1. You both have my love and positive thoughts. It's not an easy journey, but there are so many silver linings - in particular the special people you meet on your way.
